Gum Disease

Have you seen a bit of blood when brushing your teeth? That bleeding may be the initial warning signs that you’ve got gum disease. Also known as periodontal disease, this is an inflammation or infection of the gum. A mild form of this disease is called gingivitis and occurs when films of bacteria accumulate on your teeth due to poor oral hygiene. At this stage, symptoms may not be visible for a long time.

Generally, poor dental care leads to the build-up of a sticky layer, also known as plaque. Over time the plaque hardens and turns into tartar, which cuts into gums and causes them to bleed. With time, this progresses to periodontitis. At this stage,  patients experience intense pain, gingivitis, bleeding of gums, swelling and bad breath. Acute cases may show pus oozing out of your gums, loosening of teeth and abscesses.

If you’ve experienced any of the above symptoms, contact our dentists at Dana Dental for a proper assessment and treatment. Our dentist will start by examining your mouth to determine the right treatment plan for you. If left untreated, periodontitis may lead to loss of teeth, persistently swollen or bleeding gums, receding gums and bad breath.  Moreover, both mild and acute varieties of gum disease increase the risks of other conditions such as diabetes, cancer, heart disease, and pneumonia.

Let’s find and treat the problem before it gets any worse. Call or email us today to book your appointment or visit our dental office in the heart of Aurora.
