Oral Prophylaxis: Not Your Average Teeth Cleaning Procedure

by | Nov 18, 2019 | Uncategorized

Following teeth cleaning procedure at home is such a no-brainer. You just need to practice your routine in brushing your teeth and flossing in between them. For some, it’s important to include a finishing mouthwash. Oral care regimens are also popular such as oil pulling and tongue scraping. However, no matter how hard you try, bacteria will always get on top of your dental care game.

That’s why you still have to consider a professional dental cleaning procedure. It’s not necessary to see your dentist frequently for a checkup and cleaning. Generally, a regular dental appointment is twice a year or every 6 months. Dentists would understand your apprehensions due to the common belief that dental procedures can be uncomfortable. Regardless of such stigma, oral prophylaxis or in-office teeth cleaning procedure are actually enjoyable.

Teeth cleaning procedure

Before starting with the actual cleaning process, your dentist will first conduct a physical exam on your mouth. Using a dental mirror, he checks your teeth surfaces and your gums. After the checkup, the dental cleaning procedure follows.

  1. Using the scaler, he removes the plaque and tartar off your teeth. Usually, these biofilms form and solidify in between your teeth spaces and along your gum lines. It’s normal to hear and feel scraping at this point especially if you have more tartar on your teeth. Although tartar is a hardened plaque, your dentist thoroughly removes it with teeth cleaning procedure. So, if this step unease you, the trick here is to make sure that you brush and floss your teeth every day
  2. When you’re past that part, it’s time for a toothbrush. During oral prophylaxis, your dentist uses an electric brush and mildly abrasive toothpaste to clean your teeth. This technique in dental cleaning procedure is effective in reducing stains and stubborn bacteria from your bites. The grinding noise of the high-powered electric toothbrush may be scary, however, it is completely safe.
  3. At this stage, you will have a professional flossing session. Your dentist will be able to locate and reach problematic areas in your teeth that you may have missed before. It’s also a polishing phase after brushing your teeth. After that, he rinses away all the debris with water spray.
  4. Finally, he applies fluoride treatment on your teeth to strengthen the enamel. This final step gives your teeth strong protection from risks of cavities for a few months.
